Don’t just take our word for it, read what other volunteers have said…
You feel like you are giving something back and I feel it keeps your feet on the ground. My mentee has been through so much within her little life and I feel I can give something back and help – that is my reward really.
I believe that football and sports can break-down barriers that segregate communities such as race, faith and skin colour. It can bring kids together and their parents. It also keeps kids off the streets in a safe environment.
On a personal level, it has also opened many doors for me and given me opportunities.
I thrive under pressure and love being with the kids. I’ve never really worked with kids before. I was working in the construction industry before I got made redundant, but I love it. I would like to get paid work with children and young people so this is giving me lots of experience.
You help the children let off steam and get involved with all the different activities and meet their friends.
One thing I would say about mentoring is that you have got to remember why you are doing it. I know sometimes when I’m stressed at work then it can feel like a chore. Then you have to remind yourself why you are doing it. You are there to help someone and if you treat them like a chore they will feel like one. You have to try and teach them something and help them improve.
