Locations: All locations (Spa Road, Westhoughton, Hacken Lane)
Duration: We ask for a minimum of 3 months volunteering (regardless of mandatory placement hours) as we feel this is the minimum time needed for you to gain real experience, develop meaningful relationships, and ensure our young people have consistent, dependable role models in their lives.
Times: Weekdays: 4pm – 10pm and Weekends: 2pm – 9pm
About your placement
We offer students the opportunity to complete their placements with our volunteering team across a range of roles which you will find relevant to your course and the experience you are looking to gain. Every evening we put on a wide range of different activities for our young people and so every session in our Youth Club is completely different! You’ll be volunteering alongside other volunteers and our staff team to set up and run these activities, encouraging young people to join in and ensuring everyone is having fun. It’s a highly engaging role right in the middle of the action, but you’ll also be someone for our young people to open up to if they need someone to listen.
What do I get out of it?
You’ll develop your skills in communication, leadership, behaviour management and teamwork, as well as gaining practical experience in what it is like working in a charity and youth club environment. At the same time you’ll also find a highly rewarding and fun role that makes a real difference to young people.
What support do I get?
Before you start you will receive training to develop your knowledge of safeguarding and Youth Worker skills, ensuring you feel prepared and comfortable in your role. During your volunteering experience you will be supported by our friendly team and supervisor. We also offer ad-hoc training throughout the year for those wishing to further develop their skills.
Where and when can I do my placement?
We have places available at our Youth Clubs on Spa Road and in Westhoughton. You can also apply to complete your placement as a Volunteer Assistant Football Coach, however we ask that you complete a full season (12 months). Our Youth Clubs are open 7 days a week from 4pm during the week and from 2pm on weekends (Spa Road only) and so offers great flexibility. We ask that you are able to commit to a minimum of 2 hours a week for at least 3 months. We feel this is the minimum needed for you to get something meaningful from your volunteering, and it also takes a long time to build relationships and provide consistent, caring role models to the young people you will be volunteering with.
How do I apply?
The first step is to complete our application form or get in touch directly with the Volunteering Team. Once we have received your application we will invite you in for an interview to find out a bit more about you, explain how your placement will work in more detail and answer any questions you may have. We will then ask you to complete an Enhanced DBS check (the cost of this is covered by BLGC), reference checks, and our in house training. This is designed to prepare you for your role and to access your suitability.
Please allow 1-2 months for this process to be fully completed and factor this in to your deadlines when considering applying. We highly recommend applying before 01/01/2019 to ensure you are considered for this opportunity as places are limited and will be allocated to those considered most suitable.
